In an ongoing series, Dr Shailendra Sawleshwarkar, a medical practitioner working at the Sexually Transmitted infection Research Centre at Westmead Hospital, Sydney, summarises what’s known and what’s new in the area of herpes viruses and their related conditions.

 

 

 

 

Jul 2009 Male circumcision for the prevention of HSV-2 infection in men 

Circumcision of men, already known to decrease the incidence of HIV infection, has now been shown to prevent some cases of genital HSV-2 infection.

Mar 2007 Reduction of HIV-1 RNA levels with therapy to suppress herpes simplex virus 

HIV-positive women taking valaciclovir were found to have reduced plasma HIV levels.

Nov 2006 National serosurvey of cytomegalovirus in Australia 

Fifty-seven per cent of Australians are seropositive for CMV, with over half of seropositive individuals being infected by one year of age.

Large percentages of women in the United States enter their childbearing years susceptible to a primary CMV infection and a large percentage of these women experience a primary CMV infection during their childbearing years.

Increasing age is independently associated with increasing incidence (or risk of acquiring) HSV-2.

The seroprevalence of HSV-2 has declined, particularly in younger Americans.

Aug 2006 Transmission of herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2 in a prospective cohort of HIV-negative gay men 

Both HSV-1 and HSV-2 were commonly sexually transmitted, and there were more HSV-1 than HSV-2 seroconversions.

Jul 2006 Valaciclovir prophylaxis to prevent recurrent herpes at delivery 

Valaciclovir prophylaxis is tolerated well in late pregnancy, has no adverse effects on the neonate and significantly reduces clinical recurrences at delivery, laboratory detection of HSV at delivery, and caesarean delivery for HSV

May 2006 HSV type-1 as a cause of anogenital herpes: Increase in rates in western Sydney 

This study provides laboratory evidence for increasing proportions of anogenital herpes caused by HSV-1 in NSW, Australia between 1979 and 2003.

Apr 2006 HSV prevalence in the Australian population 

AHMF Board members Prof Anthony Cunningham and Prof Adrian Mindel are contributing authors in the first representative, nationwide, population based survey of HSV-1 and 2 seroprevalence undertaken in Australia.
