Oral herpes resources for patients/public

Oral herpes, or cold sores, are small blisters or sores on the face, usually on the lips or nose. They are an infectious condition, most commonly caused by herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1). The virus is transmitted via skin-to-skin contact, usually by kissing. Cold sores may occur in recurrent outbreaks, usually lasting several days.

Kissing and herpes

Kissing is a very common activity and what most people don't know is that a person can acquire or transmit herpes through kissing. The AHMF has launched a campaign to raise awareness about kissing and herpes.

Information

Most Australians carry the virus that causes cold sores. Some people never know it, others suffer repeated outbreaks of unsightly sores. What causes them, and what can you do about them?
